Secretary General Letter

Honourable Delegates and Most Distinguished Participants,

My name is Ahat Oğuzhan Ergin, a senior law student at İzmir University of Economics and I am honored to serve as your Secretary General for this conference. Alongside my Director General Zeynep Deliceoğlu, I will be leading a dedicated and passionate team to provide you with an unforgettable Model United Nations experience.

My journey in MUN began back in 2017. Since then, I have been a part of this world for eight years and years filled with debate, challenge, friendship and change. From delegate to chair, from academic to organizational roles, each step has brought new lessons, new faces and stories I still carry with me. Now, I stand here not only with years of experience but with the sincere will to create a meaningful conference for each and every one of you.

When I first stepped into the world of MUN, I saw it as a valuable addition to my résumé. But over time, I came to realize that the true impact of MUN lies not in what it adds to a CV but in what it adds to you — the courage to speak up, the strength to challenge ideas and the ability to listen and grow. That is exactly what ECOMUN strives to be: more than just a simulation, it is a platform for young minds to engage with global issues, sharpen their voice and become thoughtful leaders through diplomacy, dialogue and respect. Whether this is your first conference or your tenth, I hope you find in these four days a space to reflect, connect and discover something meaningful in yourself.

These four days belong to you. Speak when it’s difficult, think when it feels easy and never forget the value of respect. Be bold in your ideas, open in your conversations and fearless in challenging what you believe can be better — because nothing has been written yet and that is exactly where the beauty lies. As the Secretariat, our role is to stand beside you throughout this journey to guide, support and ensure that ECOMUN becomes a place of meaningful debate, genuine growth and unforgettable memories. We cannot wait to welcome you to İzmir University of Economics this September and to witness the ideas, energy and passion you will bring to the table.

With the deepest sincerity and hope,
We welcome you all.

Academic Team

The Trainees will be part of the academic team and will work closely with experienced and highly efficient members of the academic board in their selected committees. This will allow them to learn how to contribute effectively within an academic team environment. Whenever possible, they will also have the opportunity to visit other committees to observe and understand how different types of committees operate. Our main goal is to provide delegates who have never had board experience with the chance to gain this experience and begin their academic journey. The Committee Board consists of the Chair, Co-Chair and Rapporteur who moderate debates, ensure procedural rules are followed and support delegates throughout the sessions. The Crisis Committee Board consists of the Head of Crisis, Crisis Team Members and the Committee Board Members (President Chair, Deputy Chair and Co-Chairs).

Frequently Asked Questions

I am a minor (under the age 18). Can I attend the conference as a delegate on my own?

Yes. Participants under 18 can attend the conference on their own if they have their parent or guardian sign the consent form we provide and submit the signed hard copy to the designated team member.

I have never attended a MUN conference before, but I am very interested. Can I join ECOMUN?

Of course! Our conference offers beginner-level committees for new participants, as well as various roles such as admin or press in the organizing team. It is important for participants applying as delegates to indicate that they are first-timers in their applications, as this will be taken into account by our academic team for committee-country allocations.

We want to apply as a delegation. What is the minimum number of people required?

Delegations must consist of at least 5 people.

We want to participate as a delegation, but we don’t have an advisor. Can we still apply?

Of course! However, delegations without an advisor must designate a head delegate, as this is important for communication throughout the process leading up to the conference. During the conference, head delegates will also be responsible for other members of the delegation, similar to advisors.

How much time do I have to make the payment after receiving the confirmation email?

Individual participants (delegate, admin, press, chairboard, ctm) must make their payment within 3 business days, while delegations have 5 business days to transfer the amount to the IBAN provided in the email as instructed.

What do students do in Model United Nations?

Students prepare on their countries policies, then proceed on debating with member countries on topics & agenda items that is given. To debate, delegates prepare working papers on agenda items with their countries policies aligned.

Never participated in MUN, what should I expect?

Public speaking, friendly debates, wild goose chases and most importantly life long skills. Everybody in their first MUN got anxious maybe even scared but with MUN getting rid of these fears and anxieties by sharing an experience with everyone makes MUN the best place to be. Worldwide politics, geo-politics, earths future problems and more are going to be in your hand. What we need is, you to change the world.

What is Model United Nations?

From the United Nations itself; “Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them to learn more about the principles of the UN and how it functions. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts – including at the UN itself – participated in Model UN as students.’’

What are the Roles in Model United Nations?

Delegate: Delegate is the one who represents the country. Delegates are assigned a country by secretariat before the conference starts. Delegates works on their countries policies and debate on the agenda items. Chair (President & Deputy): Chair, also known as chairboard is the one who controls and observes the order in the committee sessions. Chairs are also the ones who will give you hints and advices about what to do and not to do during conference. Rapporteur: Rapporteur, takes notes of the given motions , counts during votings and helps chairboard members in their absence. Under Secretary General: Also known as USG is the one who readies up the study guide, country matrix and if needed a procedure to put in order during committee sessions. Academic Assistant: Academic assistants are the helpers of the Under Secretary Generals, finding sources to support the study guides, finding relevant countries whose policy is important on the matter agenda items that will be discussed.

What is best for me?

That’s a question you should answer but we can maybe reflect some light on the matter. What do you like to do or most importantly what do you think pushed the world off balance and now it slides on left and right. Maybe weather, maybe wars or conflicts, maybe the politics that tears apart the little bit of a cooperation countries had. Think about the problems of this world or don’t go that far and think about your countries problems or even yours. If you had a magical wand and you could have solved one of those problems , which one would you choose?
